MEDIADELCOM – Finding risks and opportunities for media

Challenge: How do major transformations in the media landscape influence the evolution of the European political and cultural space? Do the processes of Europeanisation and localisation contradict or complement each other? How are media representations of major European political and cultural issues influenced by new modes of production and consumption, as well as by new trends of ownership and control over media content?

MEDIADELCOM means 17 teams representing 14 EU countries. Through a joint effort, they have set out to develop a diagnostic tool (a model for building multiple scenarios) for policy makers, educators, critical media bodies and institutions, as well as media experts and journalists. It will enable the provision of a holistic assessment of the risks and opportunities for deliberative communication and consequently social cohesion in Europe.

The project is coordinated by the University of Tartu (Estonia), started in March 2021 and ends in March 2024.

What activities we will be carrying out

Through MEDIADELCOM we will work to ensure a rational, ethical and informed debate leading to more informed and legitimate decisions in a democratic society.

As part of MEDIADELCOM:

  • We will develop country studies on the bibliographic resources available to media researchers and the critical junctures of the last 20 years (for the period 2000-2020) in order to understand how media in Romania and 13 other countries has evolved, as well as a series of comparative analyses.
  • We will create a database of sources of documentation regarding media from the last 20 years.
  • On the basis of these studies, public policy recommendations will be made for monitoring the press and media, media use, the moral culture of communication and the sustainability of journalism.
  • We will produce a series of podcasts on media issues

Studies developed within the project:

The MEDIADELCOM project has carried out several studies looking at the risks and opportunities mass-media from Europe has confronted with, in the last 20 years. Thus, studies and materials from the 14 countries, including Romania, involved in the project are analysed and brought together through the Independent Journalism Centre’s membership of the project.

Project time frame: March 2021 – March 2024
