Registrations open for the Media Literacy Course for teachers
The Center for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is going to train the sixth generation of teachers who will pass on to their students media literacy concepts. We have opened the registrations for the accredited course “Introduction to Media Literacy for Teachers of Romanian Language and Literature and Related Subjects from High Schools” within the Media Literacy Programme.
The first step for enrolling in the course is to fill in this form until 17.09.2023, following that the first 75 teachers who registered will be contacted to sign the contract and finalise the enrolment. About the course
The Romanian language and literature teachers enrolled in the course will benefit from free training and mentoring and will be part of the media literacy community – a learning and putting into practice community for teachers involved in the programme – where they will find monthly workshops and additional resources.
The training programme, as well as the additional activities will prepare the selected teachers to incorporate elements of media literacy into their teaching and learning process of the Romanian language and literature classes they teach. Classroom implementation will be mentored by the CIJ from October 2023 to June 2024.
Running the course
The course has 15 transferable credits and runs from 13 October to 27 November 2023. In total, the course requires 60 hours of work: synchronous, online sessions with trainers on Zoom (30 hours) and asynchronous, self-study activities on the media literacy platform (30 hours).
The 4 sessions of synchronous online sessions with trainers will take place according to the following timetable:
- Week 1 – Friday 13 October (duration 3 hours, time slot 16.00-19.00), Saturday 14 October (duration 5 hours, time slot 09.00-14.00),
- Week 2 – Friday 20 October (duration 3 hours, time slot 16.00-19.00), Saturday 21 October (duration 5 hours, time slot 09.00-14.00),
- Week 3 – Friday, 10 November (duration 3 hours, time slot 16.00-19.00), Saturday, 11 November (duration 5 hours, time slot 09.00-14.00),
- Week 4 – Friday, 17 November (duration 3 hours, time slot 16.00-19.00), Saturday, 18 November (duration 3 hours, time slot 09.00-12.00).
To qualify for the final assessment process, teachers will submit their portfolio by 7 December 2023. It consists of: completing a media diary, developing an original class activity plan, implementing two separate activities for infusing media literacy in the classroom and filming two videos of maximum 5 minutes each, capturing stages of the activities implemented in the classroom.
The classroom implementation will be mentored by the CIJ from October 2023 to June 2024. CIJ will provide teachers with in-class activity scenarios for infusing media literacy concepts, during the course, and various media literacy resources that can be used with students, after the course.
