“This is a course where you learn to be a teacher in the 21st century!” – The 6th Generation of Teachers Completed the Introduction to Media Literacy Course
A new generation of Romanian language and literature high school teachers completed the Introduction to Media Literacy course. 86 teachers will begin to incorporate during classes the newly acquired concepts that will help children distinguish between reliable information and information designed to mislead or manipulate them, carefully filter the information they receive and pass on, as well as think critically.
Media literacy is not just about information and misinformation, but it is also about protecting the values of democracy, and about citizens who are engaged and responsible. And this is what one of the teachers who has just completed the media literacy course is also speaking about: “Participating in this course helped me clarify certain aspects relating to media literacy. I can say that, after completing this course, which is complex in terms of information, but exciting in terms of techniques, I can consider myself a media literate citizen, able to interact critically and responsibly.”
As 150 teachers are about to start the course in January, 100 teaching Romanian language and literature and 50 teaching English, we have gathered some impressions from teachers who got acquainted with media literacy this autumn. Below are some of the reasons why they recommend the course “Introduction to Media Literacy for Teachers of Romanian Language and Literature and Related Subjects from High Schools”.
For what it offers in terms of training
“It is a complete and complex training programme, which brings the joy of (re-)discovering concepts, didactic directions, interpretative strategies. A training programme that should not be missed!”
“It’s an interesting course from which I learned a lot, it’s dynamic and attractive. I’m delighted, it was well worth the time.”
“Access this programme which is absolutely challenging in all respects! It’s a great cognitive experience!”
For the way it changes/improves classes
“This is a course where you learn to be a teacher in the 21st century!”
“Come with an open heart, because this programme is not just a simple professional improvement course, but one that opens up a horizon in which teaching takes on new meanings through this link between the media and the curricular area of communication.”
“I urge them (e.n: teachers enrolling in the course) to make the most of this training programme, it is really very useful and everything they will put into practice will be received extremely well by the students.”
A final tip for the next generation of teachers to follow the course:
“It’s time well invested, a challenge in what regards infusing the concepts in class, but worth savoring at leisure. Make time for the course, enjoy the meetings and prepare your portfolio early.”
The 7th generation of teachers will start the course on 12 January 2024. For 4 weeks, teachers will participate in online sessions with trainers and study on the dedicated course platform. After completing the course and submitting their portfolios in March, they will start infusing media literacy during their classes.
The course “Introduction to Media Literacy for Teachers of Romanian Language and Literature and Related Subjects in High Schools” is developed by the CIJ, within the framework of the Media Literacy Programme, with the support of the Bulgarian-Romanian Observatory of Digital Media and the Romanian-American Foundation.
