Bulgarian-Romanian Observatory of Digital Media

Media literacy is a more than necessary tool for recognising forms of disinformation. We all need to be as prepared and equipped as possible to avoid falling prey to disinformation. This is what we have set out to do together with our partners from the Bulgarian-Romanian Observatory of Digital Media (BROD) project for the coming years.

What is BROD

The Bulgarian-Romanian Digital Media Observatory aims to create an international and multidisciplinary centre for detecting, analysing and fighting disinformation circulating in Bulgaria and Romania. It is a hub created by the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), an independent observatory funded by the European Union.

What BROD aims to do

The project works on two fronts, on the one hand it aims to support and equip journalists with the necessary media literacy tools needed to recognise and avoid all forms of disinformation. Fact-checking tools and databases provided by Factual and AFP are available on brodhub.eu.

In addition, we will organise media literacy courses and events for young people and adults and we will develop educational materials focused on building your resilience to disinformation and fact-checking.

The activities that the CIJ will be carrying out within the project

  • 10 media literacy courses that will prepare 250 Romanian language and literature teachers to teach the concepts studied in high school classes
  • 3 pilot media literacy courses for training secondary school teachers
  • Development of media literacy materials that will be posted on the edmo.eu website
  • Development of outreach campaigns and of the necessary educational materials specifically designed for journalists, teachers, librarians and people vulnerable to misinformation – young people and adults
  • Organise events to stress the importance of media literacy to the broader public

Project time frame

The project started in December 2022 and runs for 30 months, until May 2025.
